Recovery is often talked about as an individual journey, but lasting transformation rarely happens alone.

Recovery is often talked about as an individual journey, but lasting transformation rarely happens alone.

For families overcoming homelessness, rebuilding stability involves far more than securing housing or finding employment. It requires something deeply human: connection, support, and a sense of belonging.

At Solutions for Change, community is not just an added benefit of the program—it is a foundational part of the recovery process for both parents and their children.

When families feel supported, encouraged, and connected, lasting change becomes possible.

Why Isolation Can Be So Damaging

Families experiencing homelessness often face intense isolation.

Parents may feel ashamed to ask for help or disconnected from friends, family, and support systems. Children may struggle with constantly changing environments, disrupted friendships, and a lack of stability.

Over time, that isolation can impact emotional wellbeing, confidence, motivation, and mental health.

When people feel alone in their struggles, recovery becomes even more difficult.

That’s why creating a strong, supportive environment focused on fostering community matters so much.

Recovery Happens Best in Supportive Environments

Healing and growth are easier when people know they are not navigating challenges alone.

At Solutions for Change, families become part of a larger community of individuals all working toward similar goals: sobriety, stability, growth, independence, and a better future for their children.

This environment creates opportunities for:

Encouragement during difficult moments

Shared understanding and support

Positive relationships and accountability

Connection and belonging

Healthy social development for children

Families are surrounded by people who understand the challenges of rebuilding life after crisis and who are committed to moving forward together.

Creating Stability for Children

For children, community plays an especially important role in recovery.

Housing instability can disrupt routines, friendships, school consistency, and a child’s overall sense of safety. Many children experiencing homelessness carry stress and uncertainty that impacts them emotionally and academically.

Within a supportive community environment, children gain:

Consistent relationships

Safe spaces to learn and play

Positive role models

Opportunities to build friendships

A renewed sense of normalcy and stability

These experiences help children regain confidence and emotional security, while also giving them the chance to simply be kids again.

Parents Need Community Too

Parents navigating homelessness often carry enormous pressure while trying to rebuild stability for their families.

Having a supportive community can make a meaningful difference.

At Solutions for Change, parents are not expected to navigate recovery alone. Through mentorship, peer support, structured programming, and relationships built within the community, families are encouraged and supported throughout the process.

This sense of connection helps parents:

Build confidence

Stay motivated during setbacks

Develop healthy routines

Strengthen parenting skills

Feel seen, valued, and supported

Recovery becomes more sustainable when families know they have people walking alongside them.

The Power of Shared Accountability

Community also creates accountability. One of the unique strengths of the Solutions for Change model is the balance between compassion and personal responsibility.

Families are supported, but they are also encouraged to actively engage in their own growth and progress. Being surrounded by others who are working toward similar goals helps reinforce consistency, motivation, and long-term commitment to change.

When individuals see others succeeding, it reminds them that transformation is possible for them too.

A Community That Creates Lasting Change

The ultimate goal of recovery is not simply independence: it’s connection, stability, and long-term wellbeing.

Strong communities help families move beyond survival mode and begin building healthy, sustainable futures. For many participants, the relationships formed during the program become an important part of their healing journey and continued success long after they leave.

At Solutions for Change, community is woven into every part of the recovery process.

By creating environments where families feel safe, supported, connected, and empowered, we help parents and children rebuild not only stability, but hope for the future.

When families are given the support system they need to thrive, the impact extends far beyond one household. It strengthens entire communities for generations to come.

How You Can Help

Creating supportive communities for families in recovery takes collective effort.

Through donations, volunteering, partnerships, and advocacy, supporters help make it possible for families to access the resources, relationships, and long-term support needed to rebuild their lives.

Why Monthly Giving Matters: The Power of Consistent Support

When people think about charitable giving, they often think of one-time donations made during a fundraising campaign, annual appeal, or special event.

When people think about charitable giving, they often think of one-time donations made during a fundraising campaign, annual appeal, or special event.

These gifts are incredibly valuable and help nonprofits respond to immediate needs. But behind every successful nonprofit is another type of support that often goes unseen: monthly recurring donations.

For organizations working to create lasting change, the donors who set up recurring donations provide something that is just as important as generosity itself - stability.

At Solutions for Change, monthly donors play a critical role in helping families experiencing homelessness rebuild their lives. They provide the dependable funding that allows us to plan ahead, invest in long-term solutions, and continue serving families.

Why Stability Matters

Unlike businesses that generate predictable revenue through sales, nonprofits often experience fluctuations in funding throughout the year.

A successful fundraising event may bring in significant support one month, while another month may be much quieter. Grants are often restricted to specific programs, and one-time donations can vary based on economic conditions, seasonal giving trends, or unforeseen circumstances.

Monthly donations help bridge those gaps.

When a nonprofit knows it can count on a certain level of support each month, it creates a stronger foundation for planning and decision-making.

Instead of wondering whether resources will be available in the future, organizations can focus on delivering services, expanding impact, and meeting the needs of the people they serve.

The Power of Predictability

Recurring donations provide something every nonprofit needs: predictability.

Knowing how much support can be expected each month and quarter allows organizations to:

Plan programs with confidence

Invest in long-term initiatives

Allocate resources more effectively

Respond to emerging needs

Maintain consistent services for participants

Focus less on fundraising uncertainty and more on mission delivery

For organizations like Solutions for Change, this predictability is especially important.

Transformation does not happen overnight. Our organization is specifically set up for long-term services supporting families working to rebuild their lives. This requires consistent support, stable programming, and long-term investment. Monthly donors help make that possible.

Supporting Long-Term Solutions

The work of ending family homelessness requires more than temporary assistance.

It requires housing, education, workforce development, life skills training, parenting support, community engagement, and ongoing accountability. These are long-term investments that require long-term commitment.

Monthly donors help sustain the infrastructure that makes transformational programs possible. Their support allows organizations to think beyond immediate needs and focus on creating lasting outcomes.

When families arrive at Solutions for Change, they are beginning a journey that may take years to complete. Consistent funding helps ensure that support remains available every step of the way.

Be the Reason Transformation Is Possible

At Solutions for Change, our Hero Circle is a community of dedicated supporters who believe that lasting solutions require lasting commitment.

By joining the Hero Circle with a commitment of $100 per month or more, you become a part of a community that is investing in transformational change for our families, helping them move from crisis to stability, from uncertainty to opportunity, and from surviving to thriving.

Most importantly, your support creates something every family deserves: the opportunity for a different future.

Join the Hero Circle today with a gift of $100 per month or more and help create the stability that makes transformation possible. Because when families have the support they need, the future becomes brighter for everyone.

Behind every family experiencing homelessness is a story - a story of exhaustion, fear, uncertainty, and the quiet weight of trying to hold everything together while life feels like it’s falling apart. But within those stories are also moments of resilience, courage, and transformation.

Behind every family experiencing homelessness is a story - a story of exhaustion, fear, uncertainty, and the quiet weight of trying to hold everything together while life feels like it’s falling apart. But within those stories are also moments of resilience, courage, and transformation.

At Solutions for Change, we believe lasting change happens when individuals are given more than temporary relief. It happens when people are provided with the structure, accountability, community, and support needed to rebuild their lives from the inside out.

For Marcy Faison, that journey meant moving from survival mode into healing.

After enduring homelessness, trauma, addiction, and overwhelming instability while raising two young children, Marcy arrived at Solutions for Change searching for something deeper than temporary help. She was searching for a path forward for herself and for her children.

Now coming up on 1 year at Solutions for Change, Marcy reflects on how much her circumstances have changed. What follows is Marcy’s story, shared in her own words: a powerful reflection on resilience, accountability, motherhood, recovery, and the life-changing impact of believing that transformation is possible:

“There comes a moment in life when surviving is no longer enough, and the need for change becomes impossible to ignore. This is the story of how I moved from fear to direction, and from surviving to healing. My name is Marcy Faison, and I am a mother of two young children. I came to Solutions for Change during one of the most painful and humbling seasons of my life. I wasn’t just looking for help when I arrived here, I was desperate for real change. I needed stability, healing, and a way forward that didn’t depend on reminding myself to “just survive.” I came here because I knew my children deserved more than my best intentions; they deserved a solid foundation.

Before coming to Solutions for Change, my life was defined by survival. Every decision I made was based on fear, fear of losing shelter, fear of failing my children, fear that I wasn’t enough. As someone who comes from physical and emotional abuse from her father, and from a single mother of 3 at the age of 19, I carried the weight of past trauma, unhealthy coping patterns, and constant stress. I woke up every day already exhausted, already behind, already worried about what might go wrong. Living this way left me stuck in a cycle of fear instead of growth.

One of the hardest truths I’ve ever had to face was sleeping in a tent for 7 months while being 6 months pregnant. I remember walking miles while my body was already worn down, telling myself I didn’t have the luxury of stopping. There were days when food wasn’t an option. I relied on motel vouchers that expired quickly, never knowing what came next. Each night felt temporary, and that uncertainty lived in my chest like a constant ache. I was physically tired, and emotionally I was breaking.

What hurt the most during this time was the shame I carried. I felt invisible and alone, as if my circumstances defined my worth as a person and a mother. I avoided asking for help because I believed needing help meant I had failed. I smiled for my children while silently questioning how long I could hold everything together. I loved them deeply, but love without stability felt terrifying. I was surviving for them, but I wasn’t living.

At that time, I lacked structure, accountability, and healthy coping skills. I reacted to situations instead of responding thoughtfully. I avoided pain instead of healing it, which only made it stronger. Deep down, I didn’t trust myself to make long-term decisions, and I couldn’t yet imagine a future that felt safe or sustainable. Although I knew something had to change, I didn’t yet believe change was meant for me.

Solutions for Change became the place where my life stopped spiraling and started grounding. This program didn’t just offer resources, it required me to look honestly at myself. It taught me that accountability is not punishment but a tool for empowerment. For the first time, I wasn’t being rescued, I was being equipped. That shift changed how I viewed both responsibility and myself.

One of the biggest changes in my life has been learning how to slow down. I am learning to respond instead of react when stress or conflict arises such as calling my amazing sponsor, talking to a trusted friend, and praying on it. I’ve also discovered the power of structure, routines, and following through on commitments. I have found strength in taking on commitments such as GSR for a woman’s meeting, meal prepping for myself and my kids, and setting intentional weekly goals for myself whether it’s self-care, step work, or spending quality time with family and friends. I now understand how setting boundaries protects my peace and my progress. Instead of focusing on what’s wrong, I’m learning how to focus on what’s next. These are skills I never had before, and they’ve changed how I show up in my life.

Emotionally, this journey has been uncomfortable, but healing usually is. I’ve learned to sit with my feelings instead of numbing or avoiding them. Every night no matter how I am feeling I will journal about what was good about the day, what wasn’t good about it, and how I can do better. I’ve learned how to ask for help without shame and take responsibility without self-hatred. When it came to my son, I knew he needed help. I couldn’t stand by when I knew I could do something about it. As of today, my son and I have weekly sessions where his Occupational and Speech therapist teaches me how to better my son’s quality of life. Lessons that I implement daily. Rebuilding trust with myself has been one of the hardest but most rewarding parts of this process. That trust has become the foundation of my personal growth.

As a mother, I see the difference every day. I am more present, more patient, and more intentional with my children. They now experience consistency, emotional safety, and routines that build trust. I have rebuilt relationships with my parents and brothers, and have made new friends that I would consider lifelong. My kids know their grandparents, and have a strong connection with them, something I didn’t believe was attainable in my addiction. I’m no longer just surviving for my kids; I'm growing alongside them. Solutions for Change gave me tools, but more importantly, it gave me belief.

When I think about the future now, I don’t feel fear, I feel direction. I see stability, continued growth, and a clear path forward. I see myself pursuing education and building a meaningful career in nursing. I imagine a home where my children feel safe not just physically, but emotionally. For the first time, my future feels intentional instead of uncertain.

The lessons I’ve learned here will guide every area of my life moving forward. I plan to carry discipline, accountability, resilience, and faith into everything I do, such as my recovery journey, my career as a nurse, being the mother my children deserve, and building a strong relationship with my Higher Power. I know challenges will still come, but now I have the tools to face them. Instead of falling apart, I can problem-solve and stay grounded. These skills will help me maintain stability long after this program ends.

Breaking generational cycles is one of the most important goals of my life. I want my children to understand that where you start does not determine where you end. I want them to see that mistakes do not disqualify you from success. I also want them to know that asking for help is a sign of strength, not a weakness. My choices today are shaping a healthier future for them.

I also hope to give back. I want to remind people who feel lost or ashamed that change is possible through intentional effort and support. Transformation does not happen overnight, but it does happen with commitment. If my story can help someone believe in themselves again, then every hard moment will have been worth it.

I stand here today not as someone who has it all figured out, but as someone who chose to stop surviving and start healing. This journey matters to me because it represents growth, accountability, and self-respect. It also matters because it proves that transformation happens when people are given structure, accountability, and belief. Solutions for Change taught me that my past does not define my future. No matter how heavy your past is, it does not get the final say, change begins when you decide you are worth it.”

Recently, KUSI welcomed Aaron Byzak, CEO of Solutions for Change, to Good Business San Diego to discuss one of the most difficult realities surrounding homelessness today: “The Churn” that keeps so many individuals and families trapped in instability.

Recently, KUSI welcomed Aaron Byzak, CEO of Solutions for Change, to Good Business San Diego to discuss one of the most difficult realities surrounding homelessness today: “The Churn” that keeps so many individuals and families trapped in instability.

While many homelessness interventions focus on temporary shelter or short-term solutions, Aaron emphasized an important truth during the interview: homelessness cannot be solved through temporary fixes alone.

At Solutions for Change, the focus is not simply on helping families survive a crisis. The mission is to help families permanently rebuild their lives through long-term housing, education, accountability, workforce development, and recovery support.

Understanding “The Churn”

During the interview, Aaron described the ongoing cycle many individuals experiencing homelessness face: moving from encampments to temporary shelters, back to the streets, and through systems that often provide short-term relief without creating long-term stability.

This cycle can leave families stuck in survival mode for years.

Without addressing the deeper issues connected to homelessness, such as addiction, trauma, unemployment, lack of education, and instability, many individuals struggle to break free from the patterns that led them there in the first place.

While emergency services are important, Aaron highlighted that real progress happens when organizations focus on long-term transformation rather than temporary management.

That is the core of the Solutions for Change model.

Why Sobriety Matters

One of the key topics Aaron addressed during the interview was the role sobriety plays within the Solutions for Change model.

Our campus requires sobriety as part of the program because long-term recovery and stability are deeply connected. Addiction can often be one of the major barriers preventing individuals and families from achieving lasting independence.

By creating a sober, structured environment, Solutions for Change helps families focus on healing, growth, accountability, and rebuilding their lives.

This commitment has been a critical factor in our long-term success.

However, Aaron also explained that this requirement comes with challenges.

Because our program requires sobriety, Solutions for Change does not qualify for certain federal funding streams tied to homelessness services. As a result, our organization relies heavily on private donations, grants, and community support to continue providing services to families in need.

The Importance of Community Support

The conversation highlighted an important reality: transformational programs require community investment.

Unlike systems built around temporary interventions, long-term recovery programs involve sustained support, individualized guidance, education, and accountability. These models take time, but they ultimately create meaningful, lasting outcomes for families.

Private donors, local businesses, foundations, and community partners all play an essential role in making this work possible.

Every contribution helps provide families not only with housing, but with the opportunity to rebuild their futures.
You can find the full interview with Aaron Byzak on KUSI here.

More Than Shelter: An Inside Look at How the Solutions for Change Model Works

When people think about homelessness, the first solution that often comes to mind is simple: provide housing.

When people think about homelessness, the first solution that often comes to mind is simple: provide housing.

And while housing is a critical part of the equation, it’s not the whole story.

Lasting change doesn’t come from temporary relief. It comes from addressing the root causes of homelessness and equipping families with the tools to rebuild their lives for the long-term.

This is what makes the Solutions for Change model different.

A Long-Term Solution to a Long-Term Problem

Homelessness is rarely caused by a single event. It’s often the result of layered challenges—financial instability, trauma, lack of access to education and employment, and limited support systems.

Short-term programs may provide immediate relief but, without a structured path forward, many people find themselves cycling back into homelessness.

The Solutions for Change model was designed to break that cycle.

Instead of offering temporary shelter alone, our program is built around a structured, multi-phase journey that supports families in achieving permanent independence.

Step 1: Stabilization and Safe Housing

The first step is simple, but essential: safety.

Solutions for Change is a program built for families. Parents and their children come to our campus looking for stability and a path forward. Our families enter a secure, supportive housing environment where immediate needs—like shelter, food, and safety—are met. This creates the foundation necessary for deeper work to begin.

But unlike traditional shelter models, this is not a passive experience.

From day one, our families are stepping into a system designed for transformation.

Step 2: Structured Programming and Personal Accountability

Once stabilized, our students engage in a highly structured program focused on rebuilding key areas of their lives. Our program is structured similarly to a college experience, where the parents are referred to as “students” and work to complete a 700-day, multi-step curriculum.

This includes:

Life skills development

Financial literacy

Parenting support

Health and Wellbeing

Workforce readiness

Education and career planning

What sets this phase apart is the emphasis on personal accountability paired with support.

Our students are not left to navigate change alone—but they are also empowered to take ownership of their progress. Expectations are clear, goals are defined, and milestones are tracked. This balance builds confidence, consistency, and a sense of purpose.

Step 3: Workforce Development and Economic Independence

A key component of long-term stability is employment.

The Solutions for Change model integrates workforce training and real-world job experience to help our students build sustainable careers—not just find temporary jobs.

The students gain:

Hands-on job training

Resume and interview preparation

Access to employment opportunities

Ongoing career support

The goal isn’t just employment - it’s economic independence.

Step 4: Transition to Independent Living

As the families progress through the program, they move toward independent housing and self-sufficiency.

By this stage, they have:

Stable income

Strengthened life skills

A support network

A clear path forward

This transition is intentional and supported, ensuring that families don’t just leave the program, but are prepared to thrive beyond it.

Why This Model Works

The success of the Solutions for Change approach comes down to one core principle: real change requires both support and structure.

By combining the two, we create an environment where transformation is not only possible, but sustainable.

The Bigger Impact

When one family breaks the cycle of homelessness, the impact extends far beyond them.

Children gain stability. Families rebuild. Communities grow stronger.

This is not just about housing; it’s about creating generational change.

How You Can Be Part of the Solution

Programs like this are made possible by a community of supporters who believe in long-term change.

Whether through donations, partnerships, or advocacy, every contribution helps expand access to a model that is proven to work.

In a recent KUSI segment, our CEO, Aaron Byzak, and our Senior Director of Transformational Impact, Corine Klayko, shared a closer look at the heart of the work happening every day at Solutions for Change—and what it truly takes for families to rebuild their lives.

In a recent KUSI segment, our CEO, Aaron Byzak, and our Senior Director of Transformational Impact, Corine Klayko, shared a closer look at the heart of the work happening every day at Solutions for Change—and what it truly takes for families to rebuild their lives.

Moving Beyond the Surface of Homelessness

Throughout the conversation, Aaron and Corine explored a perspective that often gets overlooked: homelessness is not a one-dimensional issue.

While the immediate need for housing is real, the segment emphasized that long-term stability requires addressing deeper challenges—things like trauma, addiction, employment barriers, and the absence of consistent structure.

This is where Solutions for Change takes a different approach.

Rather than focusing solely on short-term relief, the discussion highlighted the importance of a comprehensive model—one that supports families in rebuilding every aspect of their lives, not just their housing situation.

The Power of Structure, Accountability, and Community

A key theme of the segment was the role of structure in creating lasting transformation.

At Solutions for Change, families enter a multi-phase program designed to provide not only stability, but also a clear pathway forward. Through accountability, daily routines, workforce development, and community support, participants are equipped with the tools needed to create sustainable change.

This approach reflects a broader philosophy: real transformation doesn’t happen overnight—and it doesn’t happen without intention.

As shared in the conversation, long-term success comes from consistent effort, guided support, and an environment that challenges individuals to grow while also supporting them along the way.

Real Change, Real Outcomes

The segment also pointed to something that sets this work apart—measurable, lasting outcomes.

Over the years, Solutions for Change has helped families move from instability to independence, with a strong focus on ensuring that success continues long after program completion.

That long-term lens is central to the mission at Solutions for Change: not just helping families get through a moment of crisis, but equipping them to build a different future entirely.

Watch the full segment here.

Longtime advisor and interim leader will guide the Vista-based nonprofit into its next chapter of helping families overcome homelessness

VISTA, CA -- The Solutions for Change Board of Directors announced today that Aaron Byzak has been named Chief Executive Officer, following his service as interim CEO since January 2026.

Byzak brings more than 30 years of leadership experience across healthcare, government, community engagement and nonprofit organizations, along with deep expertise in drug and alcohol prevention, public health strategy and workforce development. Since joining Solutions for Change as interim CEO, he has worked closely with the Board, staff, donors and community partners to strengthen organizational communication, support program operations and help position the organization for long-term sustainability.

“Aaron has provided steady, thoughtful and mission-centered leadership during an important time for Solutions for Change,” said Bret Schanzenbach, Acting Board Chair of Solutions for Change. “He understands this organization, believes deeply in the families we serve and brings the strategic experience needed to help us build on our legacy while preparing for the future. The Board is confident he is the right leader for this next chapter.”

Founded in 1999, Solutions for Change has spent more than 26 years helping families move from homelessness and dependency to stability, personal accountability and long-term independence. Through its signature Solutions Academy and related programs, the organization provides families with the tools, support and structure needed to transform their lives and break generational cycles of homelessness.

Byzak has been connected to Solutions for Change for nearly a decade, serving as a strategic advisor and volunteer instructor in the Solutions Academy. In that role, he has taught personal and professional development courses designed to help participants take ownership of their future, build confidence and develop practical tools for long-term success.

“Solutions for Change isn’t built on the idea that homelessness is inevitable but on the belief that it can be solved,” Byzak said. “When you combine accountability, support and real pathways to employment, families don’t just stabilize, they rebuild their lives,” Byzak said. “I am honored to continue serving this organization and grateful for the trust of the Board, staff, donors and partners who believe in this mission. Together, we will continue helping families change the trajectory of their lives.”

Before joining Solutions for Change, Byzak served as Interim CEO of the Grossmont Healthcare District, where he helped guide the organization through a leadership transition while advancing governance, strategic planning and community engagement initiatives. He also continues to serve in select consulting and fractional executive roles for organizations navigating leadership transitions and strategic change. He previously held senior leadership roles at Tri-City Medical Center, including Chief Strategy Officer and Chief External Affairs Officer.

As CEO, Byzak will focus on strengthening donor and community partnerships, advancing the organization’s long-term strategy, supporting staff and program leaders, and ensuring Solutions for Change remains a strong and effective resource for families working to overcome homelessness.

“We’re not here to manage homelessness. We’re here to end it for the families we serve,” Byzak said. “That means focusing on root causes, creating real opportunity and holding ourselves accountable for outcomes that actually matter. I look forward to working with our entire community to ensure this work continues and grows stronger.”

About Solutions for Change

Solutions for Change solves the root causes of family homelessness through a community-based, accountability-driven and social enterprise-supported model.

Our Interim CEO, Aaron Byzak, was featured in a national interview series by Authority Magazine, spotlighting leaders working to address homelessness across the country.

Our Interim CEO, Aaron Byzak, was featured in a national interview series by Authority Magazine, spotlighting leaders working to address homelessness across the country.

The interview, part of the publication’s “Heroes of the Homeless Crisis” series, offers a deeper look into Aaron’s personal story, leadership philosophy, and the bold approach behind Solutions for Change.

A Mission Rooted in Experience

In the conversation, Aaron shares how his early life—growing up around addiction and instability—shaped both his perspective and his purpose. Rather than defining his path, those experiences became the foundation for a lifelong commitment to helping others rebuild theirs.

That lived experience continues to influence his leadership today, especially in how he approaches the complex realities behind homelessness.

A Different Approach to Solving Homelessness

One of the core themes of the interview is the importance of addressing root causes—not just symptoms.

As Aaron explains, lasting change requires more than temporary solutions. It requires structure, accountability, and a clear pathway toward independence.

That philosophy is at the heart of our model here at Solutions for Change, which focuses on long-term transformation through our Solutions Academy—a structured program designed to help families achieve stability, employment, and self-sufficiency.

Our goal is not just to manage homelessness, but to solve it — one family at a time.

Why This Conversation Matters

The interview also explores broader questions about the homelessness crisis in the United States—from public policy challenges to the role of community support.

Aaron emphasizes that while housing is an important piece of the puzzle, it is not the only one. Mental health, addiction, trauma, and economic opportunity all play a critical role in whether someone can achieve lasting stability.

He also highlights a key belief that defines our work: real change happens when compassion is paired with accountability—and when individuals are supported in doing the hard, transformative work of rebuilding their lives.

You can read the full interview here.

At Solutions for Change, meaningful progress begins with honest conversations—about what’s working, what isn’t, and what it truly takes to solve family homelessness.

This weekend, our Interim CEO, Aaron Byzak, joined KUSI News to share a deeper look into the work happening at Solutions for Change and the philosophy driving our approach.

Shifting the Conversation Around Homelessness

During the segment, Aaron spoke to a critical distinction: the difference between managing homelessness and solving it.

While many systems focus on immediate relief, the conversation highlighted the importance of long-term outcomes—addressing the underlying factors that lead families into homelessness in the first place. These often include cycles of trauma, economic instability, lack of workforce readiness, and the absence of consistent structure or support systems.

Rather than approaching homelessness as a single-issue challenge, the discussion emphasized the need for a more comprehensive, human-centered model—one that supports the whole individual and the entire family unit over time.

A Model Built on Structure and Transformation

Aaron also shared insight into what makes the approach at Solutions for Change unique.

At the core of the model is the belief that lasting change requires more than access to housing. It requires a structured environment where families can rebuild stability step by step—developing life skills, securing employment, and creating a foundation that supports long-term independence.

Through a phased program model, families are not only given a place to stay, but a clear pathway forward—one that includes accountability, consistency, and the support needed to navigate real-life challenges along the way.

Why This Conversation Matters Now

As communities across California continue to grapple with rising rates of homelessness, conversations like this one are essential.

They create space to examine not just the scale of the issue, but the effectiveness of different approaches—and to ask a fundamental question: what does lasting success actually look like?
