What Happens During a Family's Journey at Solutions for Change?

When people hear that a family enters Solutions for Change, many imagine they receive an apartment, find a job, and eventually move on.

The reality is far more transformational.

At Solutions for Change, families aren't simply given a place to stay - they enroll in a comprehensive program designed to help them rebuild every aspect of their lives.

Homelessness is rarely caused by just one event. It is often the result of years of trauma, unhealthy relationships, financial instability, addiction, mental health challenges, domestic violence, generational poverty, or simply never having been taught the skills needed to build a stable household.

The causes are complex, so the solution must be equally comprehensive.

That's why our program, Solutions Academy, is designed as a structured journey of personal growth, education, accountability, and empowerment. Every stage builds upon the last, helping parents develop the confidence and skills needed to create lasting independence - not just for themselves, but for their children as well.

Building a Foundation

The first thing every family receives is stability.

Safe housing provides a foundation where children can sleep in their own beds, attend school consistently, and begin to experience the security every child deserves. Parents no longer have to wonder where they'll sleep each night or how they'll protect their children.

But housing is only the beginning.

Many families entering Solutions have survived experiences that most people never see.

Some have escaped domestic violence. Others have battled addiction, experienced incarceration, lost employment, or grown up in cycles of poverty that span generations.

Before lasting change can happen, healing has to begin.

Early in the program, participants engage in counseling, recovery support, peer mentoring, therapeutic activities, and coaching designed to help them process the past while creating a vision for the future.

From their very first day, each parent works with staff to create an individualized success plan tailored to their unique goals, challenges, education level, work history, and family circumstances. No two journeys look exactly alike because no two families arrive with the same experiences. Families gain access to childcare, counseling, healthcare resources, coaching, and a supportive community that walks beside them throughout the program.

Skill Building with Solutions Academy

One of the most unique aspects of Solutions Academy is its curriculum. Like a vocational school for building a successful life, parents complete structured classes covering topics such as:

  • Financial literacy and budgeting
  • Parenting and healthy family dynamics
  • Communication skills
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Healthy boundaries
  • Relapse prevention
  • Leadership development
  • Personal responsibility
  • Physical health and wellness
  • Professional development
  • Career planning
  • Household management

The curriculum builds over time, allowing participants to continually strengthen the skills they need as their responsibilities increase. What begins as learning to create a budget eventually grows into long-term financial planning. Introductory leadership lessons evolve into opportunities to mentor newer participants and serve their community.

Each lesson is designed to prepare families not just to survive, but to thrive.

Accountability Creates Lasting Change

Transformation requires more than information. It requires action.

Parents are expected to actively engage in classes, meet regularly with coaches, maintain employment or workforce training, pursue education goals, and continually work toward the milestones outlined in their success plans.

This level of accountability is one of the defining characteristics of Solutions for Change.

Rather than lowering expectations, the program raises them while surrounding parents with the support needed to achieve them. That combination of compassion and accountability helps families build confidence through accomplishment.

Every milestone reached reinforces a powerful truth:

"I can do hard things."

Preparing for a Career - Not Just a Job

Employment is an essential part of long-term stability, but finding just any job isn't the ultimate goal. Solutions focuses on helping our parents build meaningful careers. They receive workforce training, resume assistance, interview preparation, professional development coaching, and opportunities to gain valuable work experience through Solutions Enterprise and community partnerships.

As the parents progress, they build savings, establishing healthy financial habits and preparing for long-term independence.

For many, this becomes the first time they've ever experienced financial stability. Instead of living paycheck to paycheck, they're learning how to build a future.

Children Grow Alongside Their Parents

While the parents are transforming their own lives, their children are experiencing transformation as well.

Instead of moving from shelter to shelter or sleeping in unstable environments, they attend school consistently, build friendships, receive academic support, and experience the routines that help children flourish.

Just as importantly, they witness something powerful: their parents choosing growth.

Children see their mothers and fathers going to classes, studying, working, setting goals, overcoming obstacles, and refusing to give up. That example changes family legacies.

When children grow up watching perseverance instead of instability, the cycle of generational poverty begins to break.

More Than a Program - A New Way of Life

One of the biggest misconceptions about homelessness programs is that success ends when someone moves into permanent housing.

At Solutions for Change, graduation is simply the beginning of a new chapter. Families leave with stable employment, financial skills, stronger relationships, healthier habits, and a support network they can continue to rely on.

Many graduates return to mentor new participants, volunteer at events, or simply encourage families who are just beginning the journey they once traveled themselves. Their stories become living proof that lasting transformation is possible.
